Nuevo Leon Restaurant

nuevo leon stupid signRating: ★★★☆☆

Upon the half-assed recommendation of my roommate, I decided to make a saturday afternoon trip to local east-side old timer Nuevo Leon for the first time. I could tell from his half-assedness that I was taking a gamble. The ridiculuous blue sign outside the restaurant was almost enough to turn me around, but the parking lot was full of nice, shiny, expensive looking vehicles. Could this be the east side taco den of the rich and famous? I boldly threw caution to the lion on the big blue sign out front and swaggered inside. Upon entrance, the trap was sprung. As we were escorted to our table in the back room, I noticed the biggest room was full of what look like a seriously rockin’ bat mitzvah. This would explain the full parking lot, as opposed my guess about the popularity of the restaurant. Read the rest of this entry »

Nueva Onda

Rating: ★★★½☆
This little South Austin hidden treasure is tucked-away on the little street that cuts the corner of Congress & Oltorf. Nestled back off the street, it has a ample parking and a nice covered pati. Its order at the counter-style traditional mex and tex-mex breakfast & lunch with a very warm homemade taste to everything. they make Aqua Frescas daily, and even have a MOVIE NIGHT once a month. The salsas are fresh and decent , and there’s plenty of vegetarian stuff for the crunchy ones.
It’s also one of the few austin taco joints with a proper website. you can browse the ample menu here. Prices are cheap, service is fast and friendly, decor is funky and understated. they even have a nice selection of books on shelves to peruse. if you like Maria’s TacoXpress without the crowds, try Nueva Onda. Yuppies Tighen Noose on Taco Stands

taco StandIs the city attempting to shut down late Night taco stands?? It sure appears that way. Culture Wars? gentrification? Yuppies on the East-Side? Wrap it all in a corn tortilla…

Everybody- Please support the great taco stands around East Austin. Specifically seek out the stand run by AVATACO President Apolinar “Polo” Cadena. It’s called “Taqueria el Rey Polo”, parked just north of the HEB on Riverside. These affordable yet tasty taco stands are under attack by taco-hating terrorists. Support them by eating more of their tacos. every taco helps. this is not a joke. Read the rest of this entry »

Thursday Wrap Up

Cube Steakisnt it great when you get home from the grocery store and realize that you’ve scored someone else’s food? I got home from Randall’s the other day and was stoked to find 10lbs of cube steak in my groceries! I didnt steal it.. i sure as shit aint taken it back to randall’s.. thats a clean score there, thanks to the generosity (al-zeimers) of the lady in front me in the checkout line …i say my karma is still intact. so we spent the better part of the week eating cube steak in a variety of dishes – including tacos.. panfried them bitches, then cut and doused liberally with fresh lime..let me pass on some tacotown knowledge for ya:

lime is the key for any questionable meat Read the rest of this entry »

Rio Grande

Camarones DiablosRating: ★★★½☆
Stacey’s birthday dinner last night – at the former MTV real world house turned mexi-fine dining eatery called RIO GRANDE.. There was about 20 of us, and yes, we were drinking heavily.. I had the distinguished pleasure to sit down at the end of the table with Cara and John, Azar and Julianna, Jake and Billy….Yes, my crew is entirely comprised of happy couples…surprised i had an appetite with all the newly-wed pottery barn talk flying around – you guys make me sick. i think me and jimbo were the only single jerks at the 20 person table, and even jimmy got some action from azar. Jorge’s – back for more research

Rating: ★★★☆☆

so we went back.. to see if it was a fluke.. could these really be the best traditional beef tacos in Austin? it was a noble dream for them to have, but the answer is:

your tacos are only as good as your late afternoon chef’s meth buzz.
