While taking a short cut to my far east casita, I happened to drive by a place that has caught my eye several times over the past few months. Having lived near the corner of oltorf and parker (como se dice el ghetto?) for one remarkably difficult to remember summer in college, it was surprising to me that the old mr. gattis delivery hub at the corner had transformed into something else. Something….super? The “Super Burrito” seems to capitalize on on a niche in the taco scene that has long gone ignored. Really, if you want to get a drive through taco there are very few establishments that will cater to your desires. Of course the taco c is a constant, but most of us that frequent tacotown are well beyond those days. Come to think of it, “the c” has monopolized our drive thru tacos for far too long. Viva la super revolution! Read the rest of this entry »

I like to put stuff on cats. Someday I want to put tacos on cats. Fortunately, I don’t have a cat to put stuff on. Cats are evil-doers. Check out this website. Stuff ON MY CAT.com

La Salsa is a relatively small franchise of taqueria-style grills- they have 2 or 3 locations in Austin. i’ve always avoided La Salsa- based on the exterior and the general look of the place- it just looks sterile and average. Nothing ever compelled me to try it- after all, there’s so many great local, family-owned taco joints, i just never expected it to be worth a crap. Well, this week, i gave in and checked it out.
The interior- clean and well lit, if a bit plain and sterile. There’s just nothing inviting about it- and i usually don’t complain about things like that, but it really seems too vanilla to be worth a shit- but that’s just appearances. I browsed the menu and they have many interesting taco baskets, as well as enchilada plates, burritos and salads. Apparently this California-based franchise caters to the heathly, fish taco and lowcarb crowd. no biggie. At least its not the generic tex-mex bullcrap…I settled on: Read the rest of this entry »
I always like to read taco reviews in the established rags. here’s a good one from the Austin Chronicle…
TACO SABROSO
Rosa Santis sets up shop on East 7th
by RACHEL FEIT, Austin Chronicle
The first thing that the Peruvian-born Rosa Santis will tell you if you ask about her business ethic is that her goal has always been to provide jobs and to serve the community. This was how she approached her construction business when she took it over from her ex-husband 20 years ago. An acquaintance of mine worked for her for eight years and remarked, “Rosa’s good people,” when I asked him about her. “She was always real fair, treats her employees like family.” Santis’ business philosophy seems to have paid off. Since the Eighties, she has made a small fortune in the utilities construction business, expanding rapidly with Austin’s own dizzying growth.

so I stumbled onto http://austin.metblogs.com and found a couple taco joint reviews
…In the name of comprehension, we will post said review, though we claim no ownership of this content. Taco Town abides.

There really is no substitute for Maria’s Taco Xpress, especially when it comes to weekend hangover cures. But my workday breakfast taco quests at Maria’s are increasingly thwarted by construction-constrained parking and rush hour traffic.
Through the red mist of traffic frustration, I recently spied Casita Taco and its copious parking, and opted for its unproven convenience.
Casita Taco is located at 2310 S. Lamar, just North of Maria’s in the distinctive lime-green strip mall alongside Swerve and a tattoo parlour. Its narrow space and handfull of small tables suggest an upscaled taco shack rather than restaurant, although they share Swerve’s funky exterior deck for those who like a little sit-down sweat with their tacos. this is kinda funny.. not a gutbuster IMO but still worthy of taco town salute.. this is from the old sketch comedy show “The State”, the purveyors of such fine sketches as “I wanna dip my balls in it!” ..these dudes follow the monty python/kids in the hall tradition of having most of the female roles played by men.. such as this one

RETURN ViSIT:
We ate El Chile again this past Friday night with my lady and some friends. El Chile did NOT dissapoint! Do be prepared to wait on busy nights as the place ony sits about 50-75 peeps. But the food is worth it.
Basically beef fajitas, but I had to cut it up myself. It was very tasty! tender, perfectly cooked, savory, supple beef. This cow must’ve had a personal massage therapist. I Placed the cuts inside their home-made tortillas with peppers, cheese, my favorite chipotle salsa in town, and behold…a truly world-class fajita taco.
Also gotta give props to the Holy Grail of beer mugs- I had about 4 Dos Equis in these monster glasses, they weigh about 20lbs. each. Sarah ordered
oh, and check out El chile’s website.
Also, stay tuned for a review of the NEWEST spawn of El Chile, the taco stand EL CHILITO.
