Matt’s El Rancho

mattsSign.jpgRating: ★★★½☆
if you are new to Austin, lemme fill you in on something so you dont look like a chump when the time comes to name the king of Tex-mex in our fair town: no, not Maudie’s (chump)….its Matt’s El Rancho!
…why?

  • they’re closed on Tuesdays
  • the ivy on the outside walls is 3 feet thick
  • the neon sign is an retro-cool austin landmark
  • Matt was a golden gloves boxer and a marathon champion
  • the tortillas are made fresh by real mexican women behind a glass window

I went there this past weekend and had a stellar meal.. just outstanding:

it started out with the Bob Armstrong Dip.. this is the best queso in town..magnolia cafe - back that ass up.

I ordered the Carne Asada Tacos.. as a shameless carnivore, this was the best decision I made all weekend…the tacos came (along with the obligatory rice and beans) they were huge, each with about a 1/2 lb of steak cut into large cubes.. Meat and tortilla.. thats it. just the way Matt (and God) intended it. I added a little bob armstrong dip to the mix, tossed in my rice and beans.. then proceeded into the shining light at the end of the tunnel.

Came back into my earthly shell and finished the meal off with the flan….

they will take care of you at Matt’s.. the ritas were fine, the prices reasonable, Chappy likey.

Matt’s is one of those giant, family reunion style texmex restaurants that are so big you get lost on your way to the bathroom. Those places are more popular in Houston & Dallas. Really quality food and stiff drinks make it the granddaddy of tex mex in ATX.Try the Chile Relleno- maybe the best in Austin.
