Chappy’s Takes the Title!

Sunday was the big day of Joby’s 1st Annual Hot Sauce Contest and the weather made it an event only for the diehards.. we braved the cold and had a blast..(the bongits helped!) when the judging was over, Chappy’s Elbo Green had taken 1st place out of the 11 entries.. my Pineapple tropicalia took a respectable 5th place.. honorable mention goes to Bernie’s I.B.S. (Irritable Bowel Sauce).. a lethal cobination of habanero, tequila, pineapple, serrano, and probly qualudes.. it managed to kick all of our asses.. Neil is looking for you Bernie!

All in all, Joby put on a great event - humble beginnings of what is sure to become a yearly spectacle.. props to all involved..

flashback: the weekend started with a trip to Fiesta to get some sauce makins’: you gotta love fiesta, they have a great variety of fresh veggies and plenty of shit youve never seen before.. The tomatillos looked marvelous..we’ve never had a batch so ripe and untainted.. also a great selection of peppers, we got some serranos (a little off), arbol, habanero, chilaca, piquen, and a few others of the dried variety..I got some fruit for my carribean expiriment - pineapple and canned guava..

the next day, it was time to get down to bizness. we started with the traditional Chappy’s Elbo Green recipe, knocked that out in about 4 hrs. then me and Cabeza moved onto our respective solo expiriments..

Cabeza chose to do a pepper sauce of the tabasco/sriracha type.. he combined a number of peppers into a boiling vinegar pot. then blended, added brown sugar, and strained the mixture til it was a bottle of potent goodness… well done.

I deicided to make a mildly spicy, sweet sauce for fish and shrimp.. Pinnapple, cilatro, fresh diced arbol pepper, roasted, deseeded habanero, lime juice, and the canned guava with a little bit of the can syrup added to taste.. it was amazing, and more versatile than I had predicted.. it ended up going on my honeybutterchickenbiscuit later that night to rave reviews!

Thanks to everyone who came out and helped make this a very cool contest. The choice for first was very tough, but in the end the voters spoke and Chappy’s took home the blue ribbon. Look for us in the future for Joby’s 2nd Annual hot sauce contest some time in 2007.
