Taco Town

Los Comales Restaurante - Ojinaga, Mexico

West Texas, a final frontier of sorts, with big blue skies, picturesque mountains and platueas, red rock landscapes of breathtaking stature. Home to salt of the earth, hard working people who take their food very seriously.. TacoTown was lucky enough to travel on a special trip to Ojinaga, Mexico - a border town on the other side of Presidio, TX in the famous Big Bend region. We had come across a local gringo couple by the name of John and Beverley who offered to show us Ojinaga the proper way. They have been doing all their shopping south of the border for years and were well known importers of local indigineous art and were known to most of the towns shopkeepers, so needless to say, we were treated very well on our visit to Ojinaga.

Ojinaga is known as the most unspoiled town on the US-Mexican border and we were definitely struck by its charm..Our first stop was a restaurant called Los Comales. it was a block off the main town square, right in the heart of the commerce district. The town building that was the site of the historic battle of Ojinaga between Pancho Villla’s rebel soldiers and the Mexican federales..

Los Comales was small and inviting, with saltillo tile floors and about 10-15 tables in the main dining area. The menu was nicely varied.. and cheap, with hardly anything costing over $1000 pesos, or $10 us dollars. The chips were homemade, perfectly fried, perfect thickness.. which is not too thick.. the salsa’s were nice.. one was a red pepper, tangy variety and the other was a fresh, blended pico de gallo type.. John and Beverly ordered the pablano queso, which was outstanding, and the gaucamole, which was equally perfect..

We were told that the seafood was brought in fresh from the coast every tuesday.. it was friday, so we figured it was still a good bet..I ordered the large shrimp entree and hoped for the best..but I also wanted to try the tacos.. i was a little dissappointed because the waiter wouldnt let me order just 1 taco.. so I had to get a plate of 4.. for $5.50 it wasnt such a bad deal..

the food came quickly and I was presented with a large plate of bacon-wrapped shrimp with a salad and baked potato on the side.. The potato was tiny, but good.. the shrimp were outstanding.. big and fresh.. and the bacon made them melt in my mouth.. very well done.

my tacos on the other hand were dissappointing because the meat inside them was none other than overcooked hambuger patty.. the taco shells were well done, but I couldnt really get over the dry hambuger meat.. the refried beans were a highlight.. reddish brown and sprinkled with cheese, definitely not your usual “afterthought” beans…
most of the other items I tasted from around the table were good.. overall, it seems the seafood is the way to go at Los Comales.. the service was quick and friendly and the atmosphere was rustic and quaint.. but still clean and a wee bit modern (on the interior at least).

i didn\’t make the pharmy run with the rest of the gringos, but i was lucky enough to endure the methane gases and toilet mishaps for the next 2 days- they all got the giardia.
…Therefor, Los Comales is not recommended by the Cabeza.

Cabeza is just a lil jealous he couldnt make it over the border for the wonders of the real deal mex. What’s this methane you speak of? All toilet mishaps I recall to be self inflicted with a lil cactus slime “hmmmmmmm cactus slime”. Cabeza recognize and respect!!!
