Taco Town

Los Nortenos Cafe - Bryan, TX

We were playing a gig right behind this place, down on Main St. We got a tip from one of the bartenders and it was on.. evening takeout. First off.. the tacos are huge. big as yo face.. points. and the quality was good enough that we returned for lunch the next day to get the full treatment, tacotown.org style muh-fuhggas.

We walk in on a Sunday - ’round noon, the place is comfortably packed, the decor is old-town, lived-in, pale green, with relics all over the walls.. this place has got soul. I look over the menu, hunting for the most soulful dish I can find.. The caldos are on the back and it says something about them having a famous family recipe for the ‘Caldo Nortenos’.. sounds like soul to me - i’m sold.. I also order a picadillo guizada taco since Cabeza reccommended it.

the salsa should be mentioned.. a little bland, it was a traditional red variety, served warm.. the chips were good tho..

Our food arrived - my caldo was a sight to behold.. piping hot and served with all the fixins, rice, tortillas, lime, my extra taco, I was set.. the Caldo was just unbelievable.. full of flavor, in a way that could only be achieved by long, slow cooking at the hands of seasoned veterans.. if I were fallen ill, this would have cured me, no doubt….no doubt.

I must mention the picadillo taco as well.. it was fantastic.. another soul food type of thing.. full of flavor and hearty.. this place is the real deal folks..I had enough leftover for a small dinner later that day. If youre in Bryan, make a stop bu this place - its down on Main Street. Los Nortenos made a believer out of me..if I’d eaten there in 2004, I might have voted for Bush. Booosh.

to be fair- there was a Dubbya photo on the wall with a hitler stash scribbled under his nose…pretty funny considering the surroundings.

these were up there with the biggest tacos i’ve ever seen. and they were cheap, only like $3/ea. the chorizo was superb. and the carne asada taco was literally 1lb of strait up BEEF. nuthing else…thing way to go- order 1 carne asada taco, then another taco with more ingedients like eggs, cheese, lettuce, etc…then combine the 2 tacos, you get 2 FULL fajita dinners with fixins for about $6…

big up to Rola and the revolutionists for the good times.
