ZuZu Flan
If you like flan, check some out next time you’re at ZuZu. In addition to their big menu and extensive salsa bar, these guys know how to kick out tha custard… the flan was of a dense consistency, bathed in a rather thin pool of syrupy caramel.. my favorite part was the bottom, which had a slightly crunchy outer crust, the kinda wet crunch that only caramelized sugar can yield. MMMMMM!
This is the same flan that took home ‘Best in Austin’ honors from the chronicle a few years back.. Look for ZuZu on the west side if you need your mexi-fix. They are opening a new location in westlake.

Unfortunately, your remark “these guys know how to kick out the custard” came true, but only ironically. Turns out, Zuzu seems to care more about churning out mediocre custard in alarming quantity rather than honing their culinary skills. I thought my first serving was a fluke, so I gave it another try. Eventually, I was so eager to give it a fair shake that I arranged a best-of-seven trial in which only four of the flans would have to succeed. In the end, I was left disappointed. I was sure at least one of the flans was simply doused with maple pancake syrup. Here’s one disgruntled food critic.

I have to concur with Cathy. I’ve never been very impressed w/ ZuZu as a whole. they have a tendency to dish out mediocre or even un-fresh food.
and I’ve had better flan at Rosie’s Tamale House (on Hwy 71 @ 620)

I’ve been eating Mexican food for forty years.
Texas, West Continental United States, New Mexico, Arizona.
Mexico, eating wonderful Mexican delights.
Reading this blog from last week, tonight two friends in their early thirties and I decided to check out Zuzu restaurant.
Our group has spent many wonderful evenings eating Hispanic delights.
Zuzu is marked off in our book as been there, will not return.
Food missed the mark; it was tasteless, uninspired and plain.
Nice enough staff, tasteless tea.
Enchilada wrapped in a flour (not corn) tortilla, vegetables and cheeses were fresh.
$34.50 charge for three drinks and three meals was, a bit high price for self service.
Figure in it was bad food.
Very! Very! Disappointing! Don’t go.

damn.. sorry if Chappy led you astray. lately, i have noticed a decline in ZuZu’s quality.. it being the closest mexi spot to where i live, i go there frequently by default.. stay away from the fish… but the chimichana is a good dish.. never been burned on that.. the salsa bar is always fresh and worthy.. its def. a gringo-mex kinda place..kinda like disney mex at times.. whats the deal with the rice?
