Big City Burrito - Ft. Collins, CO

We stopped by this place on the way out of Ft. Collins.. apparently its the old standby for stoner college students in the area.. there were award plaques on the wall announcing “Best of..” for the past 5 or 6 years.. this place obviously doesnt suck..

Its a counter-style setup.. you order your burrito piece by piece, starting with the tortilla.. theyve got white, wheat, tomato chile, pesto, jalepeno/cheddar, and spinach.. then o to the cheese (only monterey jack), then rice, beans.. then you get to choose a filling.. chicken mole, chicken bay leaf (chicken soup flavor), carnitas, chile verde pork, beef carne asada, veggie, and potato (homefries)…easy enough eh?  now its time to choose salsa - pico, corn/chipotle, fresh jalepeno, tomatillo, and a special “salsa de lupe”.. Los Nortenos Cafe - Bryan, TX

We were playing a gig right behind this place, down on Main St. We got a tip from one of the bartenders and it was on.. evening takeout. First off.. the tacos are huge. big as yo face.. points. and the quality was good enough that we returned for lunch the next day to get the full treatment, tacotown.org style muh-fuhggas.

We walk in on a Sunday - ’round noon, the place is comfortably packed, the decor is old-town, lived-in, pale green, with relics all over the walls.. this place has got soul. I look over the menu, hunting for the most soulful dish I can find.. The caldos are on the back and it says something about them having a famous family recipe for the ‘Caldo Nortenos’.. sounds like soul to me - i’m sold.. I also order a picadillo guizada taco since Cabeza reccommended it. Read the rest of this entry »

Los Comales Restaurante - Ojinaga, Mexico

West Texas, a final frontier of sorts, with big blue skies, picturesque mountains and platueas, red rock landscapes of breathtaking stature. Home to salt of the earth, hard working people who take their food very seriously.. TacoTown was lucky enough to travel on a special trip to Ojinaga, Mexico - a border town on the other side of Presidio, TX in the famous Big Bend region. We had come across a local gringo couple by the name of John and Beverley who offered to show us Ojinaga the proper way. They have been doing all their shopping south of the border for years and were well known importers of local indigineous art and were known to most of the towns shopkeepers, so needless to say, we were treated very well on our visit to Ojinaga.
