So, I just tried the brisket tacos for lunch today at the Vaquero Cocina – one of the the new trailers on South Congress- and part of the recent food truck explosion in Austin…

Brisket Taco $5.25

I gotta admit – the Mighty Cone was calling my name from only 50ft away. But alas, i stuck to my taco exploring guns, stepped up to the Airstream counter, ordered a cold Topo Chico and TWO brisket tacos – the lone taco on the menu (also serving assorted smoked meats, corn, sweet potato fries and mexican drinks).

My meal total was about $12…not exactly cheap eats, but at least they’re big tacos.

Each Brisket taco starts with a big, fresh homemade flour tortilla, a generous pile of hot, lean and moist beef brisket (smoked on site), some cabbage slaw, a mild red salsa, and finished with a sprinkling of cojito cheese.

Oddly enough, the cheese and mild salsa combo reminded me of Italian marinara & parmesan at first – with no spice to speak of…

SO I immediately reached for Vaquero’s small selection of bottled sauces to add a kick …They had some Louisiana Hot Sauce, some Valentina, and my pick – Tex-Mex Rapper Chingo Bling’s Habanero salsa:

just a couple drops por la spicy pop, on my taco chop…i did the pop n lock, then i killed a cop…sheeet…Chingo got me rhymin’ bout taco timin. just a lil clowin bout taco townin….

anyways…

Let’s get one thing straight: the real star here was the brisket – cooked beautifully – with plenty of pit smoke flavor and not dry at all…the beef really carried this one…moisty, hearty, tasty.

Still, this taco was one topping short from being truly outstanding – maybe a spicy cream sauce or a tangy green salsa would’ve kicked it over the top.

And, not to keep doggin on it, but the red sauce was so watery – it destroyed the tortilla and dripped all over the place…bummer.

All that said – this is a GOOD taco – at least worthy of a try…but not great (for GREAT, see Matt’s El Rancho – Pecan Smoked brisket tacos -da bomb).

cabeza

Jeff Blank, chef and owner of Hudson’s on the Bend, in Austin, Texas, where the average check is $75, rolled out a lunch truck in March. The truck, called the Mighty Cone, specializes in fried chicken, shrimp and avocado coated with a mixture of almonds, sesame seeds, cornflakes and chili flakes; average checks are under $10. At Hudson’s, revenue is off by 20% to 25% compared with two years ago, Mr. Blank says, but revenues from the truck have made up for those losses and even allowed him to hire extra staff.

Good Stuff and congrats on Blank’s success. TacoTown will always be children of the cone.

We’ve been to the downtown Serranos location plenty of times, with pretty good results, but their south location – next to Best Buy and other “big box” stores down near Mopac and Ben White has been passed by 100′s of times.. I think the fact that its flanked by an Applebee’s just kills my appetite every time I see it.. But these days, Cabeza and I have basically run out of new places to try, so its time to start digging in the dirt..

My interest was piqued when i spotted the vinyl banner hanging from the side of the building as we drove up.. “Tuesday Lunch Special $12.99 Fajitas for Two” Okay, i can work with that… Probably cheaper than my backup lunch choice – Spec’s deli.

Not surprisingly, the 2pm lunch rush was nonexistent.. we got chips and salsa and our iced teas quickly.. The salsa was a minced pico variety.. a little dry.. it couldnt even be stirred.. just a lump of pico.. but tasty enough.. I spotted a lady in the kitchen making fresh tortillas and my spirits were once again lifted..

The mixed chicken and beef fajitas came to our table in a matter of minutes and we got to making our own personal fajita tacos for which to scarf.. Accompanying our skillet of meat and onions, we each got a plate of mexican rice, charro beans (with shredded queso blanco on top), and shredded yellow cheese. All ingredients were tasty.. The meat was cooked right.. the beans were flavorful.. the rice was a nice filler.. but the star was the fresh made tortillas that made every bite shine… A great lunch at a great price..

ps: Tuesday is the Fajita special, but Monday is buy 1 get 1 free enchilada plates..

After 22 years of owning and operating one of Austin’s original fine dining favorites, Castle Hill Cafe, David and Cathe Dailey have translated their experience living in San Miguel de Allende into their new neighborhood restaurant & bar, Corazon. The executive chef is now Michael Taddeo. The building and some of the classic CH dishes still remain. But they’ve updated the interior design and added a small but inviting Full Bar. here’s a quick run-down of Taco Town’s lunch trip to Corazon:

Service
ice-tea fillups every 30seconds, waiter gave good recomendations, and even brought out the secret habby sauce for us. great service for a lunch/ Chappy says: snooty undertones. copious ice tea refills

hand painted signage facing 5th st.

Atmosphere

I thought the brooding castle theme was kinda gay for a daytime lunch…Clientel was fur-coat silver spoon housewive sluts…Hey, great location, though. Chappy said “it wasn’t too fu fu…tho grego would prolly not approve.” Bernie said “the bathrooms are fuckin freezing” all 4 times he went in there to “washup”…He also noted the fact that their baffroom trash bin is a cloth bag that can just be washed, thus saving the Hefties. Good work, GREENIES.

Quality
Overall great freshness and presentation- I dig the banana leaf garnish & jello-mold rice servings
Chappy says: creative sauces and combinations

Chips/Salsa
The chips were thin, warm and fresh, ass. Red Tomatillo Salsa was pretty good, tangy (7/10)
the Habanero/Mango sauce was awesome – very sweet and hot. We had to order by special request, and the waiter warned us it was really hot. We told him “pah-leez…why don’t you just step aside, pal”. This salsa was simply delectable. Chappy was craving more, but had to stop for health reasons. (8.5/10)

Tortillas
corn were thick homemade crusty goodness (7.5/10); flour:???

Fail Factor
$2 for chips and salsa, $2 plate sharing fee, NO childrens Hot Dog and Fries option

onto the entrees…

Al Pastor Plate

Al Pastor Plate $10.95
Al Pastor plate was loaded with goodness: chopped well seasoned pork, yellow rice, sour cream, cilantro, chopped onions, and pineapple. was also served with a non extraordinary side bowl of barracho beans. Right away made a taco filled with the pastor, onions, pineapple, sour cream, xtra cilantro and then skeet skeeeeted some of that mango hab sauce on there and it was just about perfect.

Carne Asada plate $12.95
ingredients: Carne Asada steak, red-cream sauce, rice, pico and a bean gordita
Very nice cut of beef.. tender, succulent, very flavorful.. the rice was good.. the bean gordita was just ok..

Shrimp Taco

BBQ Shrimp Taco $5.95
ingredients: a thick corn tortilla, base coat of monterey jack cheese, plenty of shrimp, mango slaw, pickled red onions, and candied walnuts
notes: expensive, but utterly delicious. all the flavors melded perfectly together. 2 of them would’ve been an good meal. Chappy: very good.. tangy bbq-like sauce was surprisingly good.. great textures..awesome corn tortilla.

Lamb Empanadas

Lamb Picadillo Empanadas $4.95
ingredients: Two fried empanadas filled with roasted lamb, raisins, and toasted pecans. Served with a coconut cilantro salsa.
Lamb was tasty & moist, but not gamey. Empanada crust- was it wheat? it was crispy fried but not too greezy. Coconut dipping sauce was odd, but not bad – i ended up eating the last one with habanero sauce – much better. Chappy agreed: good taste, texture .. sauce did not compliment the flavor of the empanada, but it was interesting on its own..

We were lucky to have some old friends in town last weekend (whatup T$!). So, we figured, “what’s a fitting way to mark such a special ocassion? How bout an amazing Brunch at one of Austin’s most influential eateries: FONDA SAN MIGUEL?” Just off Burnet on Hancock in North Central Austin, FSM is a tour de force of traditional Mexican and South American cooking. Let’s eat!

Various botanitas

Everything is served buffet-style out of huge clay pots and antique mexican vats. There’s always 4 or 5 main entrees, in addition to a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, escabeche, side items, migas, ceviche, homemade tortillas, and a full bar ($3 mimosas hit the spot). And, if you leave any room in your gut, the gourmet desserts will seal the deal.

Some particularly GREAT items were:
The Carne Guisada: a juicy and flavorful classic executed perfectly- the sauce was less of a gravy, more of a rich broth.

The Corn Polenta: sweet and creamy with thick crust – perfect with a dollop of sour cream and rajas.

Pollo en mole Poblano: classic dish – rich and complex. Very satifying….recipe here

Bread Pudding: sweet nirvana

Price was a bit steep at $40/each, but the ambiance was top-notch (they had a mariachi band playing beautifully harmonized love songs – none of that la cucaracha bullshit) and nobody hits the real mexican cuisine in ATX like Fonda. The whole building is like an art museum…if you haven’t been yet, i’d suggest taking the folks out for brunch, or maybe a special date for your pumpkin face.

A mainstay on Barton Springs Road, The Green Mesquite has always been perfect for a cold beer and some tasty BBQ. Show up on weekends and there’s bound to be some good bluegrass music outside on the cozy, shady patio. The meat is always smoked tender, never over-cooked and you gotta love the iced tea with sonic ice.

» This jerkstore liked it so much – he took it upon himself to greenlight construction of a new drive-thru window. Seemed like a good idea. That is, until management discovered the crash had knocked a napkin dispenser into the beer tap – causing an entire keg of Blue Moon pour out on the floor…He is now awaiting execution on Texas Death Row.

Did we mention Green mesquite has TACO’S ?

Chop beef Bubba taco

Cheese Steak Taco Basket (7.99) 2 Big tortillas STUFFED full of juicy flank steak, topped with fresh lettuce, tomato, jalapenos and an above average BBQ sauce. Delicious. Comes with 2 sides – Cabeza reccommends the pinto beans & a side salad.

Bubba Taco Basket (7.99) 2 tacos and 2 sides. Choose between Turkey, Chop beef, Brisket, Chicken, or Pulled Pork. Cabeza tried the Turkey – very generous cuts of moist and flavorful white meat; and the chop beef- high quality chop and full of flavor.

Turkey Bubba Taco

Be sure to drizzle on the house-made Picante Salsa – it took home First Place in the Austin Chronicle Hot Sauce Fest way back in 1993. Not bad.

All in all – a great place for lunch and a perfect place to take your out-of-town friends- The menu is big, prices are reasonable (all you can eat BBQ for $11), the atmosphere is warm (they’ve got all kinds of old posters on the wall from extinct concert venues like the Armadillo) and the service is great too. But no drive-thru, sorry.

Cabeza says GO THERE!
Rating: 7 out of 10 stars 75%

You can find the new spot just south of the original location on S. 1st St and also houses a new burger trailer called Shuggies.

Formerly an auto shop and used car lot.. they’ve managed to repurpose the shop into a covered eating patio that overlooks bouldin creek, quite nice. Other renovations were still in progress..

Even though the Torchy’s was beckoning us for another taste, we had to try out Shuggies.. I got the Catfish PoBoy with fries… it was pretty solid – with a nice pineapple coleslaw.. the fries were top-notch – beer battered and crispy.

Cabeza got the cheesebuger and onion rings ($7).. he seemed to enjoy its fairly large and juicy stature, specifically noting the kaiser/onion bun as a nice touch..

We’ve passed this place numerous times, and for some reason never thought too much about it.. But sooner or later, a true taco explorer has to head into uncharted waters in search of mexi-gold. So it was on Monday February 18th that we set sail for this exciting new land, albeit with low expectations.

The vibrant colors are a nice change from the old-hat look of nearby El Gallo. El Flaco Cafe is a small restaurant of maybe 15 tables. The waitresses were eager to serve and friendly from the get-go.. We got our chips and salsa promptly. The salsa was roja.. pureed thoroughly.. and mighty tasty! It was mild, not much heat, but the flavor was unique and tantelizing.

The menu featured a standard selection of tex-mex fare.. Enchiladas, tacos, chalupas, and combo plates of the sort. Both Cabeza and I decided on combo plates.. I got the standard mexican plate with 2 beef enchiladas, a taco, rice, beans, and tortillas. Cabeza got the special plate- same as mine, but with carne guisada.

The food arrived in no time, and we dug in.. Wow.. this is as good as anything else in town. It was simple tex-mex, done right.. The beef taco was savory and fresh.. a perfect beef crispy taco.. no frills. The enchiladas were excellent, cheesy and smothered in a classic con carne sauce.. Nothing bland or tasteless about this meal.. we were enjoying every bite. The carne guisada on Cabeza’s plate took the prize though.. it was just the way I like it, full-flavored and tender, with no fatty chunks just mouth-watering morsels of roast beef in a delicious brown gravy.

The icing on the cake was El Flaco’s homemade tortillas, both flour and corn that came with our meals and were wrapped around our enchiladas.. They were perfectly done and they added to quality of our meal immensely.

The tortillas are a small detail that, to me, indicate the amount of pride a restaurant takes in its mexican food – and its is an art that seems to be lost on Austin.. hardly anyone in the ATX is making their own tortillas anymore, whatup with that? do we have to go to Taco Cabana for a fresh tortilla? perhaps we need to start a coalition to advocate fresh tortillas in more mexican joints around town..i mean, apparently this is not a problem in Houston, c’mon people!

Whale, definitely check out El Flaco if you’re down on south congress and you want a quick, laid back, and quality tex-mex experience. The manager was even cool enough to come out and check on his patrons a few times, pitching in to help the waitresses when he could.. I appreciate that kind of attention to detail.

I was taking my necessary weekly break from tacos the other day.. visiting the salad bar at Whole Foods.. feeling good about myself..salad, sushi, Feeling like a yuppie prick, which is something that bothers me about WF.. that place is eerie….its like yuppitopia -pious aroma in the air …sure, they got some cool shit but it needs some balance.. it could use a dash of Fiesta Market to even the keel …

anyway.. As soon as I paid for my food, I saw it.. A new taco bar at whole foods.. build-your-own-style tacos nestled up next to the raw food and the coffee bar.. the sign said breakfast tacos in the morning, regular tacos at lunch.. $2.99 each or 2 for $5.00…

I returned about a week later to check it out.. I walked up, no line during the lunch hour rush? interesting.. what? you yuppies dont like tacos? you bettah recognize!

heres how it goes: first you choose the meat [roasted chicken, beef fajita, or veggie chorizo] and tortilla [flour or corn].. I choose 1 beef/flour and 1 chicken/flour.. now for toppings.. for the beef: cheese, sour cream, tomatillo salsa, cilantro, lettuce..beuno.. for the chicken: rice (50c extra), cheese, sour cream, cilantro, salsa.. and Im done.. the service was friendly and quick. and the best part – they didnt skimp on the goods.. there was about 3/4 lb of beef on my taco.. it was thick juicy steak.. and at 2 for $5.50, this is the best deal you can get at Whole Foods.. if they’d have weighed my food like the salad bar.. i’d be out $15 bux! score!

now for the tasting.. first the beef taco: very nice.. you can be sure that the produce and extras will be good and fresh at whole foods and I was not let down.. the tortillas were ok, home-made, but a little bit slippery and dense..I prefer mine with a little pit of puff.. the beef was great.. tender, well-marinated.. and there was alot of it.. well done..

the chicken was next.. and I was not very impressed. It was roasted.. very soggy like chicken soup.. i had to spit out a small piece of bone that had snuck in there.. no big deal.. but the taste was very lack-luster.. I would prefer white meat chicken breast.. the beef was way better.

The Summary
Chappy says, if you can contain your pious ego long enough in this place, ditch your apricot loofah, bypass the salad bar chickpeas, and try out a couple of tacos.. get the beef..

Dart Bowl is Taco Town’s official bowlin ally and mid-week waterin hole. We go there with friends a couple times a month to play Bowling Poker and swig a few yellow beers…maybe pound a shot or two if we’re feelin salty. But the real reason to go to Dart Bowl is the Enchiladas with Egg ($6.95). They are incredible. A truely sublime collision of white-trash recreation with back-ally Tex-Mex culinary sensibilities…its culture, man!

Start with prison-style metal skillet/plate, add 3 hand-rolled cheese enchiladas (the good cheese- not cheddar- but the gooey yellow processed magic), fill the skillet to the brim with hot chile con carne sauce (swimming with big morsels of ground beef) , then smother in more cheese, then top it off with 2 fried eggs (over easy). throw in a big piece of buttery Texas Toast for the moppin’ duty and you’ve got HEAVEN. Wash it down with a cold Miller High Life- maybe the ultimate beer/food compliment.

You can only indulge is this kind of artery-crusting fare so often, but I honestly wouldn’t mind having a heart attack with a gut full of Dart Bowl enchiladas…Maudie’s has the straight plate, which is essentially the same dish, but it can’t even compete with Dart Bowl. They’re probably the best cheese enchiladas I’ve ever had. I give it a 9.5 out of 10.

“Hey man, You got something on your lip there…” “Shiit, that’s juss my Dirty Sanchez muthafucka”

If you want a more in-depth look at Torchy’s Taco’s- check out Chappy’s full review Here.

Today I only have eyes for one taco, and Holy Hell! Just got a chance to try the newest spawn of the fanatical quasi-breakfast taco dogma. It was a Revelation, or perhaps a Genesis. On the eighth day, Torchy shot his (proverbial) wad and created THE DIRTY SANCHEZ. I must admit it was the first time I’d been on the receiving end of this tasty treat…and for a dash of irony- its a meatless taco. Here’s the fillins:

Big Flour Tortilla filled with
fluffy EGGS
Tempura-fried POBLANO pepper
CHEESE
Pickled CARROT spears
Topped with Poblano-RANCH dressing

So, the tempura-fried poblano was the Alexis Amore of this gangbang, with the creamy ranch and tangy carrots playing perfect supporting roles (maybe Peter North and um…Carrot-top?), all melding into a greater-than-their-parts euphoria of taste, texture and smell. I heard thunder-claps, and visions of Dustin Diamond’s Saved by the Smell danced in my dome. Fuckin great taco and major props to Torchy’s for the balls to call it the Dirty Sanchez….

In the 24hrs since Taking the Sanchez, I’ve been flirting with the idea of this taco de-throning my longtime favorite alt-breakfast taco- Tatiana’s Tamale Taco at Maudie’s…But alas- Cabeza is never one to make a hasty decision. I’ll have to eat one more Sanchez to confirm the new champ..

oh yeah- I also had a beef fajita taco- which was amazing and also deserves props…If I can take my mind off the Sanchez for a second, then i’ll add to this post…

Dissappointment was not to be found.. I even did a return trip with Pastor Al to solidify my opinion. First off, great location..directly across the street from the lackluster effort that is El Mercado.. its like they are sticking out their tongue and saying, “Nanny Nanny Booo Boo!”. I dig the relaxed setup, it reminded me of a mini-Freddie’s (which is just down the road and backed up to the same creek) theres a sandy area for chillin, tables, chairs, a badass limestone firepit that looks perfect for evening song swappin round the smoky embers.. I wander if they have any SXSW events planned? Noise shouldnt be too much of a problem since it backs up to TSD. There’s even a basketball hoop – jack some 3′s up while you wait…

On to the menu: interesting selection.. theres a fried avocado taco that I’ve heard is spectacular.. a few vegetarian selections, and a taco of the month..on my first trip I ordered the chicken fajita taco on corn and a trailer park taco (fried chicken, hatch chiles, ranch, lettuce, tomato, cheese, on flour). The trailer park is the bomb.. the fried chicken was surprisingly tasty and the hatch chiles made it unique. I might have to get one of these every time I go to Torchy’s.. its something you would drive across town for.. The chicken fajita was pretty good, fresh ingredients and big.. the corn tortillas didnt really hold up for the whole taco, I had to use a fork for the last half.

On my return trip (about a week later), I ordered the trailer park taco once more, and also the taco of the month – the crossroads taco..(brisket, cheese, jalepeno, avocado, cilantro, and a lime wedge – thanks to Dwee over at Torchy’s for the clarification!). The crossroads was out of this world, I am a huge brisket fan and this was like heaven for me..I hope they add it to the permanent menu. We sampled some of their salsa’s this time.. check out their hot red sauce (vinegar based) – perfect on the trailer park..

Torchy’s is a great addition to the Austin taco scene, their tacos are unique, their location is perfect. I have a feeling they will start catching on bigtime as the summer months approach.. they also deliver as far north as MLK..

Chappy Approves!

We even arrived early so that we wouldnt arrive late and lose our table (the hostess had warned me over the phone that this could happen).. it was a good move, cuz we got to check out the digs, have a seat at the bar and order one of the best mojitos I have ever laid my lips upon.. for 8 or 9 bucks i guess it oughta be..it was with this that i turned to the grumpy little miser taunting me from my shoulder and gave hime a swift flick in the nuts.. I had eaten enough $3.25 crispy taco dinners at tamale house to earn myself this one, I was determined to do this meal right..drinks, appetizers, dessert, the whole nine..

we settled into a nice corner table and began to inspect the menu, mostly interior-mexican fare..The chips and salsa were outstanding.. especially the tangy verde sauce..top notch.. for appetizers, we ordered the pepper and cheese tamales and the lamb chops (boracco?).. the tamales won.. very fresh, very soft, very moist…ina word..delectable.

next, it was the pastor tacos, which curiously, are the only tacos on the menu.. thats crazy.. but when they came and I let the first bite enter my mouth and make the aquaintance of my taste buds, my life was changed forever.. seriously.. incredible.. unbelievable.. immaculate! this is the pastor you dream of.. just the right amount of pineapple aroma, the meat was cut into small pieces, smaller than you’re used to, but the taste was utter perfection. I cant believe I have lived my life for this long without experiencing these tacos.. chappy don’t blow no smoke! try these tacos..

I hadnt event gotten my entree yet and the deal was sealed.. i was happy.

The Happy Taco (Seasoned chicken with sauteed shrooms and melted jack cheese, garnished with cilantro and onions) was one of them and should be called the Im Ok Taco— sort of bland with the Jack cheese being the busting out flavor. I had to kick in some of the magic, creamy green sauce to make it fun. Even with the cilantro and onions in there, which almost all of them have by the way.

Then onto the Adobados taco: Adobo marinated chicken with cilantro and onions. Their adobo is made from scratch using dried chipotle, ancho and guajillo peppers. Now this sucka was deeelish. The peppery chipotle flavor is the primary gang buster for this taco and really compliments the chicken. I dont know if i have ever had guajillo peppers so i cannot comment on their taste but if they had anything to do with its primary flavor then i applaud them. This taco reminded me of the Cowboy and the Puerco Barracho though as the meat is that orangish red color—but hey, still really good.

So far the Cowboy and the Puerco Barracho are by far my favorite at this little joint and maybe my favorite in all of Austin to tell ya the truth. Although there were 2 tacos there on special that i have def not had yet but will very shortly. One of them was a Scallop taco that the hot bitch with the nose-ring told me they sell out of almost every day. Basically its just what it sounds like–chopped broiled scallops with cilantro and onions and shit. Sounded amazing but of course i didn’t notice that it was an option until after i ordered. The other one was another pork tenderloin type taco to which i didnt really notice the ingredients. Next time i go i will fo sho check these two out. Hey lemme get back to ya OK, i gotta crap.

p.s. For some reason i cant stop staring at the counter girl with the metal in her face—i got problems ass.
