Las Flores Tacos!

Al Pastor taco $0.99

Al Pastor taco $0.99

I found this GREAT little taco stand just a couple minutes South-East of Austin, off Hwy 183 and DG Collins Rd.  I was the only gringo there, and the girl inside spoke ZERO engles…which is always a good sign in my book.

Chorizo/egg taco (.99) was and great, especially with the chunky, vinagery house salsa piled on top..reminded me of Maria’s w/ the chimichurri (though not quite THAT good).

Bomb Taco Alert: the Al Pastor Taco (.99), was more like a BBQ pulled pork smothered in red sauce – but it was AMAZING…highly recommended.

Las Flores – try to remember that name – and go there next time you head out near the airport or traveling towards Lockhart – its right off 183 about 5 min south of hwy 71…It may be a little off the beaten path, but there’s also a Pollo Regio stand across the street- if you feel like u wanna double up.

will post more pics later.

El Borrego de Oro – Austin, TX

borrego de oro signI had passed this place on the corner of Congress and Ben White a million times..a funny looking place with a sheep on the sign.. I never really thought it would be very good, but after giving in and eating there a few times, I have been proven wrong.. I really like this place.. its unassuming.. the waitstaff is friendly (the little hispanic man that refills your tea and salsa is hilarious), and the food is made with pride…

I’ve tried the chicken tortilla soup twice and its great.. very hearty, with rice avocado, cheese,.. its like a good home-made soup that your grandma used to make.. try it during lunch and its cheaper!

the al pastor is just ok.. I thought the pieces of pork were a little too big and tender.. I know that shouldnt be a gripe, but my favorite al pastor is a little crunchy because the meat has caramalized and been cooked properly.. this is good in a different way.. like carne guisada almost..

the tortillas are made fresh in-house.. nice.

the salsa is a little watery..but tasty nonetheless.

overall, I would definitely reccommend this place to anyone.its well above average.

El Ultimo Taco Truck (Houston)

El Ultimo Taco Truck (map)
7403 Long Point Rd – Houston, TX
(in the Mr. Car Wash Parking Lot)
Hours: MON-FRI 8am to 10pm; SAT-8am to 12
Rating: ★★★½☆

A great taco conquistador once mused that, “to unearth the mother of taco pearls, one must venture into the belly of the beast, deep into the dark recesses of the latino bum cranny….or just try the East side.”

The “bum cranny” in this case is Long Point Drive – proof that Houston is too big for just one East side, and a formidable bastion of crackheads, pawn shops and seriously dope taco spots. (truth be told- Long Point isn’t really east of anything, but its nestled firmly in the “bum-cranny” of 1-10 and 290…but, fuckit- just turn the map over and call it the east side)

El Ultimo Taco Truck is definitely in the hood- the roach-coach shares a parking lot with a Lebanese car stereo shop (Los Tigres Del Norte always sound better at extreme dB’s) and a Mister Car Wash formerly owned by Kenneth Allen McDuff. However, los gringos brave enough to endure these dire environs will reap the benefits of a Latino culinary slumsplosion. Read the rest of this entry »

Fonda San Miguel part 1

Cabeza was leaving town for a while so we decided to treat ourselves to what has been touted as the nicest mexican restaurant in Austin, Fonda San Miguel…. we made reservations an everything, “party of 5 hummmkhay!” (in my rich prick voice). We even arrived early so that we wouldnt arrive late and lose our table (the hostess had warned me over the phone that this could happen).. it was a good move, cuz we got to check out the digs, have a seat at the bar and order one of the best mojitos I have ever laid my lips upon.. for 8 or 9 bucks i guess it oughta be..it was with this that i turned to the grumpy little miser taunting me from my shoulder and gave hime a swift flick in the nuts.. I had eaten enough $3.25 crispy taco dinners at tamale house to earn myself this one, I was determined to do this meal right..drinks, appetizers, dessert, the whole nine.. La Casita

laCasita.jpgRating: ★★★½☆
Thumbie and I were searching uncharted territory on a Monday afternoon, combing the wilds of Anderson Ln. we saw Enchiladas y Mas, which sadly appears to have gone under.. smells like a conspiracy…so we tredged onward until we saw a colorful little dive at the end of a mini-strip mall – La Casita. the decor on the inside was ultra bright and freshly painted.. the place sparkled with bargain priced new-ness.. we sat. I believe our waitress used to work at another taqueria in town.. she looked very familiar. she was very friendly and prompt. apparently not prompt enough for the other table across from us. This suit wearing good’ol boy had the nerve and impatience to walk to the back to ask another lady for some iced tea..and queso in a very condescending tone, mind you he had just ordered from the waitress 30 seconds beforehand.. bro – cant you see she’s taking care of our chips and salsa? step off bo-seefus! Curra’s – Al Pastor Taco

PastorRating: ★★★★☆
Hi my name is Evan, and Im an Addict-

There was a time in my life, before the taco, when I was lost and incomplete. I had never experienced the joys, and the fulfillment of the perfect taco. My life was dark, and while there were plenty of places to turn for help, none seemed to quench my thirst- my desire- for the perfect taco.

In the summer of 2002 I hit rock bottom. I’ll never forget it- the parking lot of an abandoned Taco B*** I fell to my knees, sobbing. Years of shitty tacos had finally caught up with me. THEN it Happened-

The clouds burst open and lasers shot down from heaven. A voice spoke- Currrrrra’s…. Alllll…..pastooooor… Read the rest of this entry »
